Dr. Adams will thoroughly review your medical history with you and then complete an exam. The exam will include a detailed analysis of your posture, alignment, strength and quality of muscle contractions, range of motion, sensation and reflexes. A pelvic or visceral assessment may be completed if necessary, to treat your condition.
This assessment is performed by observing and/or palpating the perineal region including the vagina and/or rectum. The exam begins externally and usually often includes an internal examination. This evaluation will assess skin condition, reflexes, muscle tone, length, strength and endurance, scar mobility, and function of the pelvic floor region. Such evaluation may include vaginal or rectal sensors for muscle biofeedback.
Developed by the French Osteopath and Physical Therapist Jean-Pierre Barral.
Definition of Visceral Manipulation as per Barral Institute: “Gentle manual therapy that assesses the structural relationships between the viscera (organs), and their fascial or ligamentous attachments to the various systems in the body. It assists functional and structural imbalances throughout the body including musculoskeletal, vascular, nervous, urogenital, respiratory, digestive, eliminatory, neuroendocrine and lymphatic dysfunction” https://www.barralinstitute.com/therapies/
A visceral exam requires the patient to begin standing or sitting with gentle pressure applied to the head followed by lying on their back with a gentle palpation of the abdomen to assess the area of greatest restriction or adhesion. This exam and subsequent treatment should not result in pain.
Bring any imaging reports (X-Rays, MRI’s, CT scans etc…) The imaging will not be read here at Blue Sky Wellness, but the radiologist’s report would be helpful.
